Mongolia, North Korea and North East Asia The government of Mongolia has been consistently supporting the denuclearization of Korean peninsula and Korean unification not only during the Cold War, but also since 1990 when the country started transitioning to democracy and free market system. In doing so, Mongolia never supported particular policies of regional powers such as USA, China, Russia and Japan towards Korean peninsula or aligned with any of them. In most cases, it has independently and consistently supported the peaceful unification of two Koreas. Since the establishment of two Koreas, Mongolia had maintained an active stance regarding this issue. Though Mongolia actively supported North Korea between 1945-1990, during which communist countries formed a block, it appealed that two Koreas should reunite by peaceful means, not resorting to war or use of force. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1990, Mongolia has been cooperating more closely with the Republic of Korea thanks to similar democratic political system and open economic structure. However Mongolia never changed its policy of supporting Korean reunification.
