    • Programs Remarks - The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program at Dartmouth College has an undergraduate student exchange program with Underwood International College, Yonsei University. This program enables undergraduates from Dartmouth to take advantage of the unique academic and cultural opportunities offered by Yonsei University.Yonsei Main Campus

Undergraduate

  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Major in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
    • Programs Remarks - The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program (AMES) at Dartmouth is an interdisciplinary degree program. In consultation with a faculty advisor, each student designs a course of study that emphasizes one or more disciplines and a region of Eurasia. At present the AMES curriculum and faculty are grouped around the following specializations: East Asia, Middle East (and North Africa), South/Southeast Asia and Central Asia. Students may also elect to specialize in Interregional Studies, working with AMES faculty with relevant interests.

  3. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Modified Major in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
    • Programs Remarks - AMES permits modifications with another major. Modified majors require completion of eleven courses: seven from the primary department or program and four from the secondary department or program.
  4. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Honors Program
    • Programs Remarks - Students with a college GPA of 3.0 and an AMES program average of 3.5 are eligible to apply to the AMES Honors Program. Applications require a proposal developed in consultation with the AMES faculty member who has agreed to supervise the student's honors thesis. The proposal should describe the thesis project in detail and relate it to the overall design of the student's AMES major.

    2. Korea-related Courses : AMES 21.09/WGST 49.05 Sexing Korea: Gender and Sexuality in Korean Popular Culture and Literature
      • Courses Remarks - Because animated films have traditionally been targeted at children, animators in Asia have often been able to side-step much of the political control exercised by some of their more centralized governments to create sophisticated artistic works. Students will analyze works from China, Japan, Korea, India and Iran within a socio-political and cultural context. Faculty from AMES will provide guest lectures on Asian history and politics.

      • Courses Remarks - This course explores the history of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) from a global perspective.

      • Courses Remarks - This course provides an introduction to Korean culture and history, examining Korea's visual and textual expressions from the pre-modern age to the twentieth century.
    12. Korea-related Courses : AMES 21.01 Cultural Struggles in Colonial Korea
      • Courses Remarks - This course explores Korean history between 1876 and 1945, as Korea entered the modern period.
    13. Korea-related Courses : AMES 21.02/HIST6 Science and Technology in the Making of Modern Korea
      • Courses Remarks - Science has often been claimed to be universal. Jesuits, Protestant missionaries, scientists, revolutionaries, and policy makers often rely on scientific knowledge as they consider it to be objective and reasonable, hence it helps them easily cross cultural, linguistic, and national boundaries. By using science as a lens, this course aims to view innovations and dilemmas of Korean society.

      • Courses Remarks - This course will introduce the arts and culture of Korea from the prehistoric period through the twentieth century.
