It is often said that in the Joseon period (1392-1910) Buddhism was suppressed. In this lecture it will be argued, however, that it continued to be a powerful force and created conditions that may help explain phenomena such as the pervasiveness of “Confucian values” and the surge of Christianity in the 20th century.
