안녕하세요! 제 이름이 일레이 첸이에요. 저는 일년동안 레이던대학교에서 한국학과 공부했는데 지금 암스테르담대학교에서 법학 졸업학생이에요. 한국에 관심있어서 한국학과 전공을 두째 전공으로 골랐어요. 저는 조선시대하고 한국문화를 특히 재미있어해요. 한국말로 쓰기 조금 힘들기때문에 영어로 더 쓸게요.
Hello everyone. My name is Jielei Chen and I am from the Netherlands. I double majored in Koreastudies at Leiden University and Law at the University of Amsterdam for one year. I have been interested in Korea for quite a long time already - it started out as a superficial interest in the entertainment industry but it soon grew out to an interest to other fields like Korean culture, history and language. My interest especially goes out to the Joseon era and Korean culture. I heard about this programme through the Facebook page of Leiden University and I decided to apply - when I heard I was accepted, I was thrilled that I could participate in a programme that not only focuses on language but also on other aspects of Korea! This is my first time in Korea and already can I say that the cultural differences between Korea and the Netherlands are vast. For example, the Dutch are known for their 'Dutch honesty/directness' while the Koreans are constantly feeling the atmosphere and have to have 'sense'. It is really interesting to live in a country that is so different from my own for a longer period of time for that I am able to broaden my perspective on the world.
I am going to start my LLM degree next school year in International Law and I will also be taking on a board position in an International Law study organisation. I am really interested in East Asia, especially China and Korea, so I think it would be interesting to see if I would be able to spread this interest through the organisation by organising lectures and other activities focused on Asia. These are all plans for the future but as for now, I am going to enjoy my time in Korea and hope that I can spread the knowledge I'll gain through this programme to other people! 감사합니다.
