강연 소개

In terms of the total GDP, South Korea is ranked 11th largest in the world. It is remarkable achievement in light of the fact that the country was one of the poorest countries in the world only a half century ago. While there are both international and domestic factors which account for this turnaround, pundits agree that human resources has been a key driving force behind development in Korea. Given the lack of natural resources in the country, the only resource it relied on to achieve high economic growth has been through high investment in education. This went hand in hand with the Korean people’s strong zeal for education. This presentation examines the role of education in bringing about positive changes in Korean society. More importantly perhaps, the presentation focuses on many negative ramifications of Koreans’ preoccupation with educational attainment, including high spending on private education and high level of stress felt by students.
