The 13th Annual Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers Workshop for Graduate Students was held at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from June 8 to 10, 2017. The title of this year's workshop,“Problematics and Prospects for Global Korean Studies", was chosen to encourage student participants to reflect on and share how Korea and Korean Studies are perceived in their own countries and to consider how each of them can contribute to the formation of a truly global perspective on Korea.

The Consortium had two major goals. One was the fostering of a new generation of Korean Studies scholars who have a broad global perspective on Korea and who can develop friendships and life-long working relationships with their peers in various other countries. The workshop was intended to enable students from throughout the world to get to know each other and to learn how Korean Studies is perceived and practiced in places other than their own universities. The second was to promote the growth of Korean Studies in regions where it has yet to flourish. This year's workshop was able to bring graduate students from the Latin American countries to present and participate. The workshop hosted four students from Latin America, and one student from Spain. The workshop provided a meaningful opportunity for the growing number of scholars from Latin America by allowing them to interact with the leading faculty in their respective fields of study. It was a rare occasion for the students to interact with the faculty other than their own advisor, who may not necessarily specialize in the students' research area. The students from Latin America expressed great interest in attending future workshops and conferences on Korean Studies, and they were highly encouraged to network with fellow scholars from East Asia and Europe. Overall, the workshop yielded important feedback by faculty from around the world. The faculty discussants shared their thoughts and recommendations on the papers, and students engaged in conversations to share their research interests and progress.
