  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : East Asia Visual Cultures Series
    • Program Remarks - The East Asia Visual Cultures series, funded by EASC’s Department of Education Title VI grant, sponsors events related to East Asian arts, film, media, and popular culture. The series aims to bring together art and media industry experts, filmmakers, scholars, and the wider community. In years past, EASC has invited renowned film directors such as Li Yang (China), Feng Xiao Gang (China), Im Kwon-Taek (Korea), Iwai Shunji (Japan), and many others.

Colloquium

  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Southern California East Asia Colloquium Series
    • Program Remarks - The Southern California East Asia Colloquium Series, funded by EASC’s Department of Education Title VI grant, supports lectures, workshops, conferences and colloquia that bring experts in diverse fields to USC each year to discuss the latest topics on East Asia.

Undergraduate

  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : East Asian Area Studies Major
    • Program Remarks - The East Asian Area Studies (EAAS) major offers an interdisciplinary approach to learning about East Asia, combining language study with history, social sciences and the humanities. EAAS is a complementary double major; students have successfully combined their study of East Asia with majors in biology, business, communication, film, international relations, and more.
  2. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : East Asian Area Studies Minor
    • Program Remarks - A minor in East Asian Area Studies is a great complementary focus for students in professional schools or liberal arts. Students who have minored in EAAS have majored in a range of disciplines, including economics, religion, business, neuroscience, and public policy.


Graduate

  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : M.A. in East Asian Area Studies
    • Program Remarks - Candidates for the M.A. degree are able to design an interdisciplinary program of study based on individual scholarly and professional goals. Students choose from courses offered by departments and professional schools across the university, concentrating on one country (China, Japan, or Korea) or developing region-wide expertise.
  2. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Joint MBA/MA in East Asian Area Studies
    • Program Remarks - The Marshall School of Business in conjunction with the East Asian Studies Center offers a joint MBA/MA degree that combines graduate business education with training in the cultures and societies of East Asia. Applicants for the joint MBA/MA must first apply and be accepted into the full-time Marshall School of Business MBA program. Students may apply for the MA in East Asian Area Studies during their first year of study in the MBA program.
  3. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures
    • Program Remarks - EALC currently offers a Doctorate of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Cultures. Students seeking a terminal M.A. degree should consider applying to the Ph.D. program instead.

    • Program Remarks - The core requirements for the EALC major allow students flexibility in designing their own course of study. Majors typically select one language and cultural area (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) in which they do most of their course work.

    2. Korea-related Courses : EALC 115 Korean I
      • Course Remarks - EALC 115 introduces the fundamentals of standard Korean in all four levels of communication (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). The course provides practice in basic Korean conversations as well as fundamental grammar.
    3. Korea-related Courses : EALC 117 Korean II
      • Course Remarks - Continuation of EALC 115. This course focuses on basic conversation, reading, writing as well as grammar. Students will be prepared to make basic transactions. Prerequisite: EALC 115 or equivalent
    4. Korea-related Courses : EALC 215 Korean III
      • Course Remarks - This course deals with four areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will learn more complex structures and useful expressions.
    5. Korea-related Courses : EALC 217 Korean IV
      • Course Remarks - Continuation of EALC 215. This course deals with four areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will learn to make daily transactions in Korean and be prepared to describe and narrate personal surroundings and events. Prerequisite: EALC 215 or equivalent

      • Course Remarks - Advanced reading in modern Korean materials, integrating conversation, composition, and some translation. Students will be prepared to discuss topics related to local/global communities as well as personal experiences.

      • Course Remarks - Continuation of EALC 315. Conversation, reading, and writing with the use of Chinese characters. Students will be prepared to discuss topics related to local/global communities as well as personal experiences.

      • Course Remarks - Selected readings in Korean texts, pre-modern and modern, in various literary and non-fiction genres; focus on developing reading and translation skills. Prerequisite: EALC 317 or equivalent.

      • Course Remarks - Selected readings in Korean texts written in mixed script; a systematic studey of Chinese characters and translation of text.

Study Abroad

  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Major in East Asian Languages and Cultures
    • Program Remarks - Many EALC majors complete part of their departmental requirements while studying abroad in China (Nanjing University or Beijing University), Taiwan (National Chengchi University), Japan (Waseda University, Nanzan University, or Tokyo International University), or Korea (Yonsei University), typically during their junior year.
