  1. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Major in Asian Studies
    • Program Remarks - The Asian Studies Major is designed to provide students with language and cultural competence in a region of Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Russia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia) that can become the foundation for careers in public affairs, public service, business, and many other fields. Students are strongly encouraged to combine the Asian Studies Major with a major in another discipline so that upon graduation they have acquired a foundation of career-oriented skills as well as a high degree of global competency.

    10. Korea-related Courses : 1010 Beginning Korean I
      • Course Remarks - Restricted to students with no or minimal previous formal or informal training in Korean. Development of proficiency in receptive and productive skills, and beginning understanding of Korean culture. Comprehending and creating with the language at the sentence level and handling simple everyday-life situations.

      • Course Remarks - This course offers development of proficiency in receptive and productive skills, and understanding of Korean culture. Comprehending and creating with the language at the sentence level and handling simple everyday-life situations.
    12. Korea-related Courses : 1120 Accelerated Beginning Korean
      • Course Remarks - This course combines courses 1010 and 1020 of the language into one semester. Intensive focus on development of beginning competency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
    13. Korea-related Courses : 2010 Intermediate Korean I
      • Course Remarks - This course offers development of skills in all areas at the sentence-level. Begin learning to comprehend and create paragraph-level language, such as factual descriptions and narrations, and handle more complicated everyday-life situations.

      • Course Remarks - This course offers continued development of skills in all areas at the sentence-level. Begin learning to comprehend and create paragraph-level language, such as factual descriptions and narrations, and handle more complicated everyday-life situations.
    15. Korea-related Courses : 2120 Accelerated Intermediate Korean
      • Course Remarks - This course combines 2010 and 2020 levels of the language into one semester. Restricted to students with two semesters of classroom experience with the language, or an experience that places them at an equivalent level of proficiency who will be able to move through material quickly especially early in the semester. Completion of this course with a C- or better fulfills the BA Language Requirement.
    16. Korea-related Courses : 2600 Korean Conversation
      • Course Remarks - This course provides students the opportunity to improve their skills in speaking and listening, to expand their cultural awareness, and to increase their self-confidence in the language. Designed to be taken with 1020, 2010, or 2020, but open to any student not enrolled at the 3000/4000 level. No written work. Credit/Non-Credit grading.
    17. Korea-related Courses : 3060 Third-Year Korean I
      • Course Remarks - This course is designed for students who have completed 1010 to 2020, and as the first course for students who learned the language during residence in Korea. The aim is increased proficiency in reading, composition, and speaking in different levels of formality and with greater cultural nuance.
    18. Korea-related Courses : 3070 Third-Year Korean II
      • Course Remarks - This course is a continuation of 3060, with the additional goal of beginning proficiency in Chinese characters used in Korean (Hanja, Hanmun). Pending instructor approval, students who have not taken 3060 may register for this course.
    19. Korea-related Courses : 3100 Korean Culture Through Literature & Film
      • Course Remarks - This course offers an exploration of Korean culture through close readings of literature from the late 17th century to the contemporary period, accompanied by the viewing of films from recent decades.
    20. Korea-related Courses : 3600 Intermediate Korean Conversation
      • Course Remarks - The course provides students at all levels of fluency the opportunity to improve their skills in speaking and listening and to expand their cultural awareness. Presentations by the instructor and invited speakers on topics of cultural interest (e.g. current events, film, art, music, cuisine, business, politics, cross-cultural encounters) will be followed by general discussion and small group conversation. Credit/No Credit. No written work.
    21. Korea-related Courses : 4880 Directed Reading/Independent Study
      • Course Remarks - This course consists of readings selected by student and designated professor to broaden student's background in area where no course is taught, or internship in classroom assistance for Korean language courses.
    22. Korea-related Courses : 4900 Advanced Conversation and Writing / Special Topics
      • Course Remarks - Themes of special interest, repeatable when specific topics vary, with focus on writing and conversation through topical discussions.
    23. Korea-related Courses : 4999 Honors/Thesis Project
      • Course Remarks - Restricted to students in the Honors Program working on their Honors degree.
    24. Korea-related Courses : 6880 Directed Reading
      • Course Remarks - Meets with KOREA 4880.
  2. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Minor in Asian Studies
    • Program Remarks - A minimum of 6 Asian Studies courses totaling 18 credit hours must be completed successfully. Students must pass each Asian Studies course with a C or better. The credit/no credit grading option is NOT available to Asian Studies majors when enrolled in AS courses. No more than three courses taken from any one department can be counted for the minor.
  3. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Korean & Korean Studies Minor
    • Program Remarks - The structure of Korean is complex but logical, and the formality levels that contribute to this complexity create a type of linguistic and social richness unique to languages like Korean and Japanese. The alphabet is easy to learn?within a matter of hours students can be writing and sounding out Korean words. The rewards of learning Korean are great. Knowledge of Korean will not only enhance students' career options and access to a dynamic part of the cultural, economic, and political landscape of Asia, but being able to express themselves in this unique language will let them discover new modes of thought, communication, and culture to enrich who they are.

    • Program Remarks - The Master of Arts in Asian Studies is designed to prepare our students to become global citizens, versed in the languages and cultures of the region, with the intellectual flexibility to combine area studies and professional competence, and cognizant of the complex linkages that define the profound relevance of Asia for the United States today.
