    6. Korea-related Courses : E A STDS 363 China and World War II in Asia
      • Course Remarks - This course is intended to help students understand World War II from the perspective of Asia. The focus is not only on the American and Japanese roles in the war but also on lesser, often overlooked participants such as China, Korea, and Southeast Asia. The course will focus not only on the diplomatic, political, and military situation of wartime Asia, but also on perceptions and experiences of the war from those most heavily affected by it: those experiencing it on the ground. Understanding this war is critical for helping us understand contemporary Asia. The foundations of the Cold War and the post-Cold War world that we live in today were forged on battlefields in mainland China, Burma, small islands in the Pacific, and in the skies over the archipelago of Japan. In order to provide the background and understand the legacies, this course covers an extended time frame, beginning in the 19th century with the arrival of the West in Asia and continues into the 1950s.
  2. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Concentration in East Asian Studies
    • Program Remarks - East Asian studies encompasses China, Japan, and Korea?Pacific Rim nations characterized by rich cultural heritages, critical geopolitical positions and rapidly expanding economies. East Asia plays a central role in world politics and the global economy, and the importance of this region will increase in the 21st century. The Center for East Asian Studies acts as a clearinghouse and coordinating center bringing together an interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff, and students interested in the study of China, Japan, Korea, and, in association with South Asian Studies, Tibet. Courses related to East Asia are taught by core and affiliated faculty across the university.
  3. Program (Korea-related degree offered) : Certificate in East Asian Studies
    • Program Remarks - The undergraduate certificate in East Asian studies is available to students working toward a baccalaureate degree in any of the University of Wisconsin?Madison schools and colleges, and to Special students. This certificate meets the needs of students choosing to focus on the East Asian region (China, Korea, Japan, and Tibet) within their primary major, but not wishing to commit to the rigorous language study required for the East Asian studies major. Students select coursework reflecting their interests from myriad classes offered through many university departments, and can work toward a variety of undergraduate majors. Upon earning the certificate, this emphasis is noted on the student's transcript. The certificate is of value to students wishing to demonstrate their knowledge of the East Asian region either to potential employers or to graduate schools.
