Music is designed to express itself completely in sound. At its greatest, it creates a particularly concentrated, gripping and all-enveloping experience. It is able, with its transient presence, to create a sense of loss, longing, or renewal, and to involve us emotionally in its destiny. Music's sounds lack literal or fixed meanings, thus the experience of a musical work is a very subjective one. What loss, longing, love, haughtiness, rage . . . sounds like is not the same from culture to culture, generation to generation. Live music performance works when a performer is having a conversation with an audience. When the audience does not “speak” the same musical “language” as the player, then much less is communicated. Korean traditional music, gukak, faces this situation every day in Korea, where young people today grow up being taught and surrounded by the sounds of the west (disguised as K-pop) from the womb on. Given that Koreanness is defined by blood and not culture, it is gukak that has become the foreigner in the land of its birth. In this “talk concert,” Dr. Clark will introduce ways to listen to gukak that will hopefully turn any future traditional concert you attend into a dialogue—something in which you are active participant—instead of a lecture on the long lost past.
