학회명(Title) VIII Latin American Korean Studies Congress
일시(Date) 2017년 8월 24일(목) ~ 8월 25일(금) [August 24 ~ August 25, 2017]
장소(Venue) 브라질 상파울루대학교 (University of São Paulo, Brazil)
주최(Host) University of São Paulo (FEA and FFCLH)

EECAL is an international academic event held every two years in different Latin American countries and brings together the best experts in Korean studies in the region. In its eighth edition, it contemplated the following objectives:
・To deepen the critical mass and the network of experts in Korean studies in Latin America;
・To disseminate the contributions of Latin America and highlight its specificity in the worldwide flow of Korean studies;
・To contribute to improving mutual understanding between Korea and Latin America, strengthening common interests and efforts to meet their challenges.

For the coordinators of the event all these goals were successfully achieved. The innovations contemplated in the initial proposal were implemented and praised by all participants. Keynote speakers and the participation of young researchers from different backgrounds, but mainly from Brazil, were important to mark the eighth meeting. In addition, for the first time, we selected the best works (which received a fast track publication from the Journal of International Emerging Markets) of the conference, which impressed positively the participants and the audience.

According to the Program, 8 panels were presented in two days of activity. The totality of the panelists attended the event, with the exception of prof. Lytton Leite Guimarães and Antonio J. Doménech . Panelists and the public (undergraduate and graduate students of the two faculties involved in the organization) totaled approximately 50 people each panel. Only in the first panel, which was attended by the government authorities and the University’s authorities, had a higher attendance of 60.

With respect to the quality of the papers, this can be verified in the Proceedings of the VIII EECAL. The material presented in the Proceedings has been edited and we expect that it will be published as a book by Editora Juruá. This publisher is the same one that published the book of the III EECAL meeting hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUCSP), Brazil, in October 28-29, 2007.
